PX capacity surges, or will face oversupply

With the increasing demand for PX in the domestic market, but the domestic PX capacity is insufficient, and the operating rate is low, the gap of PX demand is large, China is the country with the highest demand for PX market in the world. In recent years, China's import dependence on PX has increased. In 2018, China's dependence on xylene import reached 61%, an increase of 14 percentage points over 2012.

In order to solve the problem of self-sufficiency of PX market, in 2019, with the production of many large-scale refining and chemical plants such as Hengli petrochemical, Sinochem Hongrun, Hainan refining and Chemical Co., Ltd., Zhejiang Petrochemical Co., Ltd., the PX market ushered in the centralized production capacity. In 2020, it is estimated that there will be about 4.8 million tons of new PX plants. With the continuous production of large-scale refining and chemical integration projects in China, PX production is released in a centralized way, which is far greater than the domestic net increase demand.

PX market plummeted, with new low price and profit

Since December last year, PX price has been in a downward channel, especially under the negative effect of crude oil slump. At present, PX (FOB South Korea) price is around 462 US dollars. It can be said that now PX price has been at a low level for more than ten years. If the price falls, it will inevitably bring about the compression of profits. In the past year, PX's profit has been in the state of loss, and the range of loss has been expanding and fluctuated within a certain range. At present, the PX profit margin has lost to around $76 / T, while the PX profit reached around $115 / T in the same period last year.

Affected by the weak environment, the pneumonia epidemic and the poor performance of crude oil, both profits and prices fell, and maintenance may be able to hold up prices to a certain extent.
