While the output has reached a new high in the past two years, PTA demand is still worrying. During the holiday period, polyester production and sales in the downstream of PTA were large. Previously, the high inventory pressure was released. Polyester enterprises that had planned to control production also resumed normal production with the release of inventory pressure. Polyester construction began to pick up day by day. In the short term, PTA demand performance was acceptable. However, it should be noted that the release of downstream polyester inventory pressure does not come from the recovery of demand side, but from a simple inventory transfer.

As the overseas epidemic situation is still severe, the export channel of the terminal weaving industry is blocked, and the sharp decline of foreign trade orders forces the terminal weaving enterprises to implement production control. In the near future, the operating rate of the terminal loom has dropped to a low level of less than 50%. The decline of weaving starts weakens the demand for polyester, and the polyester stock is likely to accumulate rapidly. At the later stage, polyester enterprises are still likely to stop production or reduce the negative operation under the inventory pressure, and the PTA demand will be weakened at that time. On April 23, the comprehensive daily operation rate of polyester was 83.89%, 7.17% lower than that of the same period in 2019; the daily operation rate of Jiangsu and Zhejiang looms was 48%, 34% lower than that of the same period in 2019.

High inventory keeps suppressing price

Since December 2019, domestic PTA social inventory has entered the stage of accumulation. Under the influence of the epidemic, the time for the downstream polyester enterprises to return to work was delayed, the PTA social inventory accumulated increased by 250000 tons per week, and exceeded 3 million tons for the first time on March 13 this year. In the last ten days of March, when several PTA large-scale units in China were shut down for maintenance, PTA supply decreased, and PTA social inventory also declined briefly.

However, with the end of plant maintenance, the supply of PTA is restored, and PTA social inventory returns to the situation of accumulation again. High PTA social inventory continues to suppress PTA prices. On April 24, the social inventory of PTA in China was 3.4 million tons, an increase of 50000 tons compared with April 17, and a significant increase of 2.265 million tons compared with the same period in 2019, a record high.

From the root analysis, the current PTA market supply and demand contradiction is still prominent, domestic inventory continues to high PTA price weak operation. Although PTA period price has recovered in recent two days, it is difficult to ease the contradiction between supply and demand in the short term. Meanwhile, there is still great uncertainty in the trend of international oil price. Therefore, PTA period price will still operate with weak oscillation and limited rebound. In the medium and long term, the price trend of PTA is determined by the overseas epidemic situation.

If the epidemic situation improves, PTA period price is expected to rebound: on the one hand, the improvement of the epidemic situation can boost the global crude oil demand, combined with the OPEC + production reduction to be implemented in May, the international oil price is expected to stabilize, PTA cost support will be enhanced by then; on the other hand, after the epidemic situation improves, the export channel of terminal weaving is expected to reopen, the demand for terminal weaving will increase, and PTA supply-demand contradiction will be achieved To alleviate, PTA inventory will also be reduced. However, if the overseas epidemic is still severe, PTA demand will weaken. Although enterprises can reduce the supply and demand by stopping production or reducing the negative load to alleviate the contradiction between supply and demand, it can stabilize the PTA period price at most, which is difficult to promote PTA price rebound.
