The processing cost has dropped dramatically

Although OPEC+ finally reached novel coronavirus pneumonia agreement, but because of the reduction in production scale, which is less than market expectations and difficult to offset the global crude oil demand reduction caused by the new crown pneumonia epidemic, international oil prices began to decline in April 9th, and the decline in the past two days has been significantly expanded. This not only aggravates market worries, but also makes PTA cost support collapse again.

The direct raw material of PTA is Px, which is made of naphtha, and naphtha is a light oil processed from crude oil or other raw materials and used as chemical raw materials. Naphtha and crude oil prices have a high correlation, according to estimates, from 2019 to now, the correlation coefficient between the spot prices of naphtha and crude oil is as high as 0.9402.

Due to the rapid expansion of PX production capacity and intensified market competition in recent years, PX price dropped significantly in 2019, so the correlation coefficient between PX and crude oil spot price is slightly lower since 2019, but still 0.6758.

After the process of "crude oil → naphtha → PX → PTA" caused the crude oil price to fall sharply, naphtha and PX prices also fell sharply, and the processing cost of PTA, which is not high in the near future, fell again.

According to the estimation, on April 24, the domestic PTA processing cost (excluding labor cost and fixed cost) was 2474.87 yuan / ton, a sharp drop of 1166.65 yuan / ton compared with March 6. Since March 2020, the sharp drop in international oil price has also led to a sharp drop in PTA raw material prices, and PTA processing profits have picked up. According to the estimation, on April 24, the domestic PTA processing profit (excluding labor cost and fixed expenses) was 655.13 yuan / ton, which was still at a relatively high level in the near future although it was narrowed compared with the processing profit of 700-800 yuan / ton in the previous days. Therefore, the production willingness of PTA enterprises has been significantly improved, and the start-up of PTA plant is at a high level.

The demand is still possible to turn weak

Due to the relatively considerable PTA processing profit in the near future, although PTA period price has dropped continuously, and it has set a new low in history for many times, but PTA unit construction is still at a high level, PTA supply is loose. On April 24, the daily operation rate of domestic PTA plant was 92.77%, 17.26% higher than that of the same period in 2019; on April 24, the weekly production of domestic PTA was 928200 tons, 16300 tons lower than that of the previous week, 138800 tons higher than that of the same period in 2019 (on April 17, the weekly production of domestic PTA reached a record high).
