There are different ways to increase the relative molecular weight of dyes. In the early stage, the azo dyes synthesized by using benzidine as diazo component, including some acid dyes, have better molecular coplanarity, which can improve the wet treatment fastness of acid dyes more than only considering the influence factors of relative molecular weight, This kind of planar structure has more chance to produce van der Waals force and hydrogen bond between dye molecules and fibers.

The more practical way to increase the relative molecular weight is to introduce aliphatic alkyl, cycloalkane and aromatic hydrocarbon into dye molecules. The introduction of these groups can not only reduce the solubility and hydrophilicity of acid dyes in water, but also increase the attraction between dye molecules and protein fiber molecules, and obviously improve the fastness of wet treatment of dyes. For example, when the length of carbon chain and the relative molecular weight of the acid dye synthesized by using p-alkylaniline with different carbon chain as diazo component and H-acid acylation product increase, the fastness to soaping also increases.

It can be seen that the introduction of hydrophobic chain to change the dye molecular structure, increase its relative molecular weight or reduce the proportion of water-soluble groups such as sulfonic acid group is helpful to improve the fastness of wet treatment.

3、 The relationship between dye molecular structure and levelness

In addition to a certain degree of fastness to light and humidity treatment, dyes should also have necessary levelling properties in order to achieve good dyeing effect.

In order to improve the solubility of dye in water, increase the hydrophilicity of dye molecules and reduce the affinity of dye to fibers, more water-soluble groups are introduced into dye molecules, such as sulfonic acid group and carboxyl group, which can effectively increase the levelness of dye. Because acid dyes exist in molecular state in water because of their small size, the molecules that dye on the fiber may still migrate during the dyeing process, leaving the dyeing position and re fixing at other positions of the fiber, that is to say, there is a process of continuous movement of dyes in the fiber so as to achieve uniform distribution finally. For acid dyes, increasing the relative molecular weight and introducing special groups such as aliphatic carbon chain can reduce the hydrophilicity of dyes, increase the affinity of dyes to fibers, improve their wet treatment fastness, but affect the levelness of dyes. Among them, the weak acid dyes with long carbon chain are more obvious because the van der Waals force between the dyes and the fibers greatly affects the migration of dye molecules on the fibers, so the levelness is poor. In order to solve the above contradiction, it is usually to increase the relative molecular weight to a certain extent. Aromatic rings or cycloalkanes can be used to replace the fat chain. At the same time, strong polar groups, such as substituted sulfonylamino and ester groups, are introduced to endow the dye with certain hydrophilic properties. While increasing the binding ability with the fiber, it can also have better levelness.
