French Standards Association AFNOR issued afnorspecs76-001 "barrier masks", which establishes the minimum requirements, test methods, manufacturing and use methods of general (non-medical) masks.

According to the guidelines, woven "protective masks" are suitable for healthy people who do not show clinical symptoms of viral infection and do not come into contact with people with such symptoms. This type of mask cannot provide the same medical protection function as the applicable en14683 (medical mask) or en149 (respiratory protective device).

Afnorspecs76-001 masks are not medical devices, so they are not within the scope of medical device directive 93 / 42 / EEC or medical device regulation (EU) 2017 / 745. Neither of them is PPE, so they are not within the scope of regulation (EU) 2016 / 425.

Specs76-001 has become one of the few standards for general purpose woven masks in the industry environment dominated by the performance standards of medical and protective masks / respirators, and is regarded as the key to solve the shortage of masks.

With the continuous development of covid-19, more and more governments suggest that citizens wear masks in public places, which leads to a sharp increase in the demand for universal masks.

The requirements of afnorspecs76-001 include, but are not limited to, appearance and dimensions, packaging and materials, marking and labeling, cleaning and drying, respiratory resistance (respiratory capacity), and penetration resistance (particle filtration).

The key part of the guide is washing and drying, because the manufacturer must indicate: the instructions for cleaning the mask, the use time before cleaning the mask (up to 4 hours), and the maximum cleaning times before disposing the mask.

In order to verify the efficacy of the mask, the permeability and permeability test should be carried out after the maximum washing times. The product must meet the specified minimum permeability and permeability requirements.
