History of spinning technology


Hands slub


Most natural fibers, such as wool, cotton, etc., were only a few inches long, so they had to be twisted into yarn before they could be woven.


At this point, the raw wool yarn can probably be made by rubbing it with both hands. Later, flax and cotton fibers were also used to make yarn, making the fabric more varied.


Manual spinner and spindle


Starting around 7000 BC, people began to spin yarn on burning rods (spindles) and spindles. The spinner holds the twister with the fiber in one hand and with the other pulls the fiber into a loose yarn that is wound in a groove at the top of another rod or spindle.


The bottom of the spindle is weighted with a flat stone or spindle pan. The spinner turns the spindle like a top. The spindle burns the loose yarn into yarn and then winds the yarn around the spindle. This method has been used for thousands of years and some of the yarns produced are of fairly good quality.


The spinning wheel


The appearance of the spinning wheel had a great influence on the spinning technology. It is generally believed that the spinning wheel originated from China and evolved from the silk reeling machine. The origin of the European spinning wheel is not clear, they appear in the later years, the earliest recorded spinning wheel is around the 14th century.


In the fifteenth century, in the saxons (now part of east Germany), an improved spinning wheel with a burning rod mounted on a machine and wheels operated by a foot pedal could spin and wind yarn at the same time, freeing the spinner's hands and reducing labor.

Yarn is a kind of textile, which is processed into products of certain fineness with various textile fibers. It is used for weaving, rope making, thread making, knitting and embroidery, etc. It is divided into short fiber yarns and continuous filament yarns.


Yarn fineness can be expressed in various ways, such as number, metric, imperial, and denier (see number). The twist of a yarn is indicated by the number of twists per meter or inch.
